Various Artists – Instro-Hipsters A Go-Go! [Box] [11/11]

Liner Note Author: Richard Morton Jack.A five-CD limited-edition box that combines all five volumes of Psychic Circle`s Instro-Hipsters a Go-Go series, complete with a new 80-plus page booklet that ties everything together and adds biographies of the artists as well as discographies, this set is nothing less than the instrumental soundtrack of Swingin` London in the late 1960s and early `70s. The variety on display here is impressive, ranging from B-3-driven soul-jazz jams to twangy surf guitars, honking sax R&B stompers, and sweeping, orchestrated lounge oddities. Truthfully, it sounds like the Mod soundtrack to an epic James Bond movie tossed into a time warp blender, and while there is almost every kind of instrumental style represented here, it has a surprisingly unified feel and tone when all is said and done (the whole affair was compiled and sequenced by Nick Saloman, otherwise known as the Bevis Frond). Among the highlights are Timebox`s delightfully loose “I Wish I Could Jerk Like My Uncle Cyril,” the insistent “Saturday Jump” by Midnight Shift, the Mike Cotton Sounds` “Like That,” the Roulettes` “Junk,” and the nascent funk of “Ridin` on the Gravy Train” by the Thunder Company, but again, even though this box certainly feels varied, there`s an overriding scheme to it that makes it all fit together like a giant, glowing neon hymn to the wonderful excesses and eccentricities of hip `60s London. If that`s one`s cup of tea, than this is a big old cup of tea. ~ Steve Leggett Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Adriano & Carol`s House (03/2005-06/2005).Brazil`s Cansei De Ser Sexi (the name translates from the Portuguese as “Tired of Being Sexy”) sounds like Kraftwerk, the Sex Pistols, and the Go-Gos tossed with house music and mixed in a post-punk blender. With Sub Pop releasing the band`s self-titled debut, CSS has already garnered plenty of indie rock cred, but it`s the band`s postmodern take on poppy, amped-up dance music–complete with surging beats, oozing synth lines, and sing-song call-and-response vocals–that will win over listeners. Titles like “Let`s Make Love and Listen to Death from Above,” “Meeting Paris Hilton,” and “Music is My Hot, Hot Sex” offer a cheekiness that adds to the album`s charm. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Arthur Russell – World Of Arthur Russell

2004, U.K. issue; includes “Is It All Over My Face (Larry Levan Mix).”England`s Soul Jazz label did the music world a tremendous favor in 2004 when it released THE WORLD OF ARTHUR RUSSELL, a collection of 11 essential tracks by dance music scientist Arthur Russell. Having worked with Allen Ginsberg, Philip Glass, and Ali Ahkbar Kahn, cellist Arthur Russell seems like one of the least likely candidates to have revolutionized disco music; yet under the various monikers Dinosaur L, Loose Joints, and Indian Ocean, among others, Russell created some of the most unique and challenging dance music ever made. Informed by his background in classical and experimental forms as well as a love of New York City`s club culture of the late 1970s and early `80s, Russell took the essentials of disco–a basic funk groove and an irresistible hook–and ran them through the avant-garde blender. Tracks like “Go Bang” and the classic “Is It All Over My Face” immediately compel the listener to get up and move, while “Pop Your Funk” and “Let`s Go Swimming” (often referred to as the only dance track that you can`t actually dance to) show an artist attempting to deconstruct and transcend everything pop music is about. In addition to Russell`s dance tracks, WORLD OF also contains several of his gorgeous solo cello/vocal pieces, such as the hauntingly expansive “A Little Lost” and the minimalist, almost ambient “Keeping Up.” Arthur Russell was a complex, fearless artist, and this collection is an essential introduction to his singular body of work.Despite a prolific career, 1986`s WORLD OF ECHO is one of the few proper full-length albums by cellist Arthur Russell to be released under the artist`s name. Classically trained and well-versed in experimental forms, Russell became famous for creating some of the most adventurous dance music of the late 1970s and early 1980s. WORLD OF ECHO, however, focuses on Russell`s beautiful if perplexing solo cello/vocal pieces. A devout Buddhist, Russell`s music is informed by a deep-seated spiritualism, and his effects-laden compositions like “Tone Bone Kone” and “Answers Me” give off a repetitive celestial drone that is indeed transcendent in its beauty. As conceptual as his music can be, Russell is never too distanced from pop modes (he once told Allen Ginsberg he wanted to make “Buddhist bubble-gum music”). In addition to occasional world-music rhythms, WORLD OF ECHO also contains dramatically reworked versions of two of his most notorious dance tracks: “Wax the Van” and “Let`s Go Swimming.” (The originals can be found on the stellar compilation THE WORLD OF ARTHUR RUSSELL.) This album illustrates not only Russell`s versatility as an artist, but also his belief that aural beauty is not limited to one specific sonic realm but, in fact, lies in all of them.
